Tap into the collective intelligence of more than 150 of the leading minds in data (and thousands of your peers) at Strata 2013. Strata gives you the skills, tools, and technologies you need to make data work today—along with the forward-looking insights and visionary thinking O’Reilly is known for.
Here are just 5 reasons to attend Strata Conference 2013:
- Discover how some of the world's most successful companies (like Google and Microsoft) tackle and use big data —and how you can apply what they've learned to your organization.
- Get face-to-face with the leading big data experts, and exchange ideas with people who face the same challenges you do.
- Explore proven best practices, new analytic approaches, and the most useful tools, tips, and technologies for making Big Data work for you, no matter what business you're in.
- Dive into detailed case studies of data successes from innovative start-ups and established businesses that have implemented highly successful data-driven strategies.
- Learn how to use the data you already have, and how you can find and acquire useful data that will help you make better decisions for your business
If you are in IT, 2013 is going to be the year that you will want to dive into the "big data" pool if you haven't been pushed in already. But don't worry - it's no longer sink or swim. For one, we'll be here to help coach IT folks through it all. And while the concepts, terminology and hype have been all over the place, once you start floating around you'll find that under the surface much of what fills the big data pool is familiar IT infrastructure, data management, and services re-cast around a few easy-to-grasp innovations. For example, if you are in IT and asked to pick a Hadoop distro to stand up, you'd probably start with evaluating the three main distributions of Hadoop (other than getting it straight off Apache) followed by other downstream OEM'd and pre-integrated versions. The main distros are from Cloudera, Hortonworks, and MapR. I didn't really appreciate the differences until talking with all three individually (at 2012 NY Strata, see below).
Whether your data hacker worldview is in terms of "black hat" v.s. "white hat" (or Gandalf's early grey), "us" v.s. "them", or, as in the military, "blue" v.s. "red" (the red guys are the ones you aim at), the fact is that exploitable data sets are growing larger and more available day by day.... I was able to catch a great Strata sponsored online conference this week on Data Warfare emceed by Alistar Croll, and while we've all heard about some good uses of Big data to combat evils like financial fraud, identity theft, tax evasion, and spam, it was eye opening to understand that inevitably bad guys are going to use Big data to conduct nefarious and often criminal activities against us....
Strata + Hadoop World is where cutting-edge data science and new business fundamentals intersect—and merge. You'll learn business applications of data technologies by dissecting case studies, develop new skills through in-depth tutorials, share emerging best practices in data science, and build the future of your business.
I had a blast last week at Strata/Hadoop World NY 2014. I got a real sense that the mass of big data sponsors/vendors are finally focusing on what it takes to get big data solutions into production operations. In fact, in one of the early keynotes it was noted that the majority of the attendees were implementing software engineers and not necessarily analytical data scientists. Certainly there was no shortage of high profile use cases bandied about and impressive sessions on advanced data science, but on the show floor much of the talk was about making big data work in real world data centers... I’ll certainly be diving into many of these topics more deeply, but here is a not-so-brief roundup of major themes culled from the 20+ sponsors I met with at the show:...
Stealthy startup Galactic Exchange Inc. burst out of the shadows this weekend touting a new product that’s able to spin up an Hadoop or Spark cluster, ready to go, in just five minutes.

Strata + Hadoop World is where cutting-edge science and new business fundamentals intersect—and merge. It's a deep dive into emerging techniques and technologies. You'll dissect case studies, develop new skills through in-depth tutorials, share emerging best practices in data science, and imagine the future.
In 2014, O'Reilly and Cloudera joined forces to merge Hadoop World with Strata Conference. This series of premier data events around the world is led by Apache Hadoop founder Doug Cutting of Cloudera, O'Reilly's Roger Magoulas, and entrepreneur and author Alistair Croll.
Our speakers have a laser-sharp focus on the data issues shaping all aspects of business, including verticals such as finance, media, retail and transportation, and government.
The data industry is growing fast, and Strata + Hadoop World has grown right along with it. We've added new sessions and tracks to reflect challenges that have emerged in the data field—including security, ubiquitous computing, collaboration, reproducibility, new interfaces, emerging architecture, building data teams, machine data—and much more.
Strata + Hadoop World is now the largest conference of its kind in the world, yet it’s kept the informal, collegial spirit that makes it one of the best places to connect and collaborate.
