EMC Takes Its Next Bite Out Of Software-Defined Storage

ViPR, the software-defined storage platform that EMC announced at last May’s EMC World 2013, started shipping a couple of days ago and has one signed customer and five pending, “true enterprise and household-name customers,” said Chris Ratcliffe, VP, Marketing, Advanced Software Division, EMC. However, rather than celebrating its release and a handful of contracts, the storage giant is promoting a major push to attract partners to drive its SDS initiative.

Storage Virtualization Meets Software Defined Storage: EMC ViPR 1.0

EMC recently GA'd a first version of ViPR. Many storage folks are not still clear about what ViPR is all about. Is it just storage virtualization repackaged to augment EMC's physical infrastructure solution features this time? Is it a shining new example of Software Defined Storage? Is it unified storage, management, and data services ala private cloud? What is going on here?

Snakes in the Data Center: EMC ViPR Slithers In

Storage experts know that there are two ways to handle crushing data growth - the kind of growth that exceeds our traditional scale-up storage array capabilities. The bad way is to keep plopping down more copies of those arrays which tends to spiral OPEX out of control ... The better way depends on looking for solutions that might include things ... that not only improve the relatively linear CAPEX per unit of data, but change the OPEX curve downwards as storage scales out... As storage requirements grow beyond even scale-out arrays, perhaps across data centers and geos, and need to support mixed services, multi-stage workflows and arbitrary lifecycles, the monster of complexity once again arises and OPEX ramps back up. This is where we think EMC is going with the roll out of ViPR. ViPR is a slippery thing to get a handle on because it's not just storage virtualization, but provides some real software defined storage opportunities as well. We are looking at it as more of a possible future storage platform than simply as a bit of storage indirection...

EMC Releases ViPR into the Wild - Storage Controllers for Everyone!

At EMC World 2015 this year EMC made a bunch of announcements, but one of the most discussed, and causing the most head-scratching, was the open sourcing of their ViPR storage controller as the new Project CoprHD. Why would EMC give away the core automation component to their much bandied about "Platform 3" strategy? According to the new projects FAQ - Making ViPR Controller available as the CoprHD project in the open source community allows customers, partners, service providers, systems integrators and even other storage vendors to download, expand and contribute to ViPR Controller's breadth and depth of features and functions. Some are of course judiciously skeptical. This is EMC's first foray into open source. One cynic suggested that open sourcing was the best way to kill off an unwanted product...

Big Data Storage Solutions: Options Abound

Hadoop, Spark and other big data analysis tools all have one thing in common: they need some form of big data storage to hold the vast quantities of data that they crunch through. The good news is that big data storage options are proliferating.
