Tintri VMstore: Zero Management Storage (TVS)

Storage challenges in the virtual infrastructure are tremendous. Virtualization consolidates more IO than ever before, and then obscures the sources of that IO so that end-to-end visibility and understanding become next to impossible. As the storage practitioner labors on with business-as-usual, deploying yet more storage and fighting fires attempting to keep up with demands, the business is losing the battle around trying to do more with less.

The problem is that inserting the virtual infrastructure in the middle of the application-to-storage connection, and then massively expanding the virtual infrastructure, introduces a tremendous amount of complexity. A seemingly endless stream of storage vendors are circling this problem today with an apparent answer – storage systems that deliver more performance. But more “bang for the buck” is too often just an attempt to cover up the lack of an answer for complexity-induced management inefficiency – ranging across activities like provisioning, peering into utilization, troubleshooting performance problems, and planning for the future.

With an answer to this problem, one vendor has been sailing to wide spread adoption, and leaving a number of fundamentally changed enterprises in their wake. That vendor is Tintri, and they’ve focused on changing the way storage is integrated and used, instead of just tweaking storage performance. Tintri integrates more deeply with the virtual infrastructure than any other product we’ve seen, and creates distinct advantages in both storage capabilities and on-going management.

Taneja Group recently had the opportunity to put Tintri’s VMstore array through a hands-on exercise, to see for ourselves whether there’s mileage to be had from a virtualization-specific storage solution. Without doubt, there is clear merit to Tintri’s approach. A virtualization specific storage system can reinvent a broad range of storage management interactions – by being VM-aware – and fundamentally alter the complexity of the virtual infrastructure for the better. In our view, these changes stand to have massive impact on the TCO of virtualization initiatives (some of which are identified in the table of highlights below) but the story doesn’t end there. At the same time they’ve fundamentally changed management, Tintri has also innovated around storage technology that enables Tintri VMstore to serve up storage beneath even the most extreme virtual infrastructures.

Massively Scalable, Intrinsically Simple: Tintri's Low TCO for the Virtualized Data Center

Fast-growing virtualized environments present a thorny storage challenge to IT. Whether mission-critical applications with demanding SLAs, VDI rollouts with boot storms, or deploying a private cloud for large dev & test environments: delivering virtualized environments and cloud deployments using traditional storage can stall or break a virtualization project.

Flash technology is certainly part of the solution to performance challenges posed by virtualized workloads, but can be prohibitively expensive to broadly implement across the environment. Although flash can be deployed in a number of targeted ways and placed in the infrastructure, the more it is tied down to specific hosts and workloads, the less benefit it provides to the overall production environment. This in turn causes more management overhead.

Recently Taneja Group ran Tintri VMstore storage through our hands-on validation lab and documented significant large factors of improvement over traditional storage. Those factors accrue through Tintri’s cost-effective acquisition, simplicity and ease of deployment and data migration, effective high performance and availability and smooth expansion over time.

This Field Report validates our impressive lab findings with feedback from the field: six customers who have Tintri storage in production environments. While each customer has a unique own story to tell, we found that everyone documented a compelling value proposition based on TCO factors. Throughout our research we found that Tintri’s approach provides significantly lower TCO than traditional storage solutions.

The Promise of VM-Centric Storage and VVols: Tintri VMstore Delivers the Future Promise Now

The din surrounding VMware vSphere Virtual Volumes (VVols) is deafening. It started in 2011 when VMware announced the concept of VVols and the storage industry reacted with enthusiasm and culminated with its introduction as part of vSphere 6 release in April 2015. Viewed simply, VVols is an API that enables storage arrays that support the functionality to provision and manage storage at the granularity of a VM, rather than LUNs or Volumes or mount points, as they do today. Without question, VVols is an incredibly powerful concept and will fundamentally change the interaction between storage and VMs in a way not seen since the concept of server virtualization first came to market. No surprise then that each and every storage vendor in the market is feverishly trying to build in VVols support and competing on the superiority of their implementation.

Optimizing VM Storage Performance & Capacity - Tintri Customers Leverage New Predictive Analytics

Today we are seeing big impacts on storage from the huge increase in the scale of an organization’s important data (e.g. Big Data, Internet Of Things) and the growing size of virtualization clusters (e.g. never-ending VM’s, VDI, cloud-building). In addition, virtualization adoption tends to increase the generalization of IT admins. In particular, IT groups are focusing more on servicing users and applications and no longer want to be just managing infrastructure for infrastructure’s sake. Everything that IT does is becoming interpreted, analyzed, and managed in application/business terms, including storage to optimize the return on their total IT investment. To move forward, an organization’s storage infrastructure not only needs to grow internally smarter, it also needs to become both VM and application aware.

While server virtualization made a lot of things better for the over-taxed IT shop, delivering quality storage services in hypervisor infrastructures with traditional storage created difficult challenges. In response Tintri pioneered per-VM storage infrastructure. The Tintri VMstore has eliminated multiple points of storage friction and pain. In fact, it’s now becoming a mandatory checkbox across the storage market for all arrays to claim some kind of VM-centricity. Unfortunately, traditional arrays are mainly focused on checking off rudimentary support for external hypervisor APIs that only serve to re-package the same old storage. The best fit to today’s (and tomorrow’s) virtual storage requirements will only come from fully engineered VM-centric storage and application-aware approaches as Tintri has done.

However, it’s not enough to simply drop in storage that automatically drives best practice policies and handles today’s needs. We all know change is constant, and key to preparing for both growth and change is having a detailed, properly focused view of today’s large scale environments, along with smart planning tools that help IT both optimize current resources and make the best IT investment decisions going forward. To meet those larger needs, Tintri has rolled out a Tintri Analytics SaaS-based offering that applies big data analytical power to the large scale of their customer’s VMstore VM-aware metrics.

In this report we will look briefly at Tintri’s overall “per-VM” storage approach and then take a deeper look at their new Tintri Analytics offering. The new Tintri Analytics management service further optimizes their app-aware VM storage with advanced VM-centric performance and capacity management. With this new service, Tintri is helping their customers receive greater visibility, insight and analysis over large, cloud-scale virtual operations. We’ll see how “big data” enhanced intelligence provides significant value and differentiation, and get a glimpse of the payback that a predictive approach provides both the virtual admin and application owners.
