Asempra BCS - Continuous Availability

The reality today is that too many data protection platforms targeted at the small and medium enterprise (SME) market fail to deliver basic capabilities with the ease of use, speed, and flexibility necessary to provide the holistic, effective data protection demanded.  What the SME requires is a new approach to data protection that is easy to use and ensures the business that both the application and data remain available. We’ve identified this approach to data protection as Continuous Availability.

Symantec Backup Exec: Comprehensive Data Protection for Growing Businesses

Symantec recently juiced up its Backup Exec (BUE) product line adding appliance and cloud based offerings to the mix. This announcement reinforces Symantec’s commitment to data protection for small and medium sized businesses, the charter being led by the newly formed Information Management Group (IMG). What is significant about this announcement is that Symantec is seeking to morph Backup Exec from a single product into more of a data protection platform. Symantec envisions Backup Exec to be the data protection platform of choice for SMBs and small to medium enterprises. With features like VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V integration, deduplication for virtual infrastructure, support for cloud as a tier and end point protection, Symantec is squarely setting its sights at beating competitors like CommVault (Simpana Galaxy), Microsoft (Data Protection Manager), Acronis (TrueImage), CA (ARCserve) and others to name a few.

This Taneja Group Opinion covers Symantec’s Backup Exec – providing a complete data protection solution for SMB/SME and consolidating its already dominant market share.

Taneja Group Research: Deduplication and the Innovation Race -- It Isn't Over

I think it is safe to say that data deduplication technology on the backup side has now gone mainstream. At the enterprise level we estimate that almost all companies have installed some form of data deduplication technology, even if the percentage of data under the jurisdiction of dedupe is closer to 40 percent. In other words, each enterprise has dedupe equipment, but not all backup data is yet being deduped. The reasons vary with each enterprise (importance of application, geographic isolation, limited funding, and so on). When one looks under the covers one finds that some of this deduplication is happening at the source but a large majority at a target, and more specifically, a target appliance.

IBM ProtecTIER: From Backup to Recovery

When it comes to backup and recovery, backup performance numbers rule the roost. But a reliance on backup numbers alone is dangerous. Recovery may not happen as frequently as daily backup but recovery is the entire reason for backup. Because when a recovery operation looms -- especially if the recovery is large and the potential loss is huge -- fast recovery performance becomes more urgent than backup ever was.

Unified Data Protection Comes of Age

Traditional data protection is three decades old and is definitely showing its age. Poor management oversight, data growth, virtualization, data silos, and stricter SLAs all conspire to strain traditional backup to the breaking point.

Traditional backup usually follows a set pattern: full baseline backup, daily incremental backup, full weekly backup. When backup volumes were smaller and fewer, this process worked well enough. But a daily operation creates backup data that is missing up to 20 hours or more of current data input, making it impossible to restore to a meaningful RPO. The obvious solution is continuous backup with frequent snapshot recovery points. But this type of backup product can be expensive and resource-intensive, and IT often reserves it for a few Tier 1 transactional applications. But what happens to large and popular business applications such as email, back office files and content management systems? Failed backup and recovery can still devastate a business.

This article will look at why traditional backup is so difficult to do well these days, and why the risk and expense are so high.

Enterprise Online Backup: What Administrators need to know

We define online backup as using the cloud to provide users with a highly scalable and elastic repository for their backup data. This is true across all online backup users but enterprise has specific requirements and some risks that consumer and SMB customers do not share. Consumer and SMB – including education and small government agencies – primarily require acceptable backup and restore performance, plus security and compliance reporting in their online backup. The enterprise needs these things too but they are dealing with additional pressures from backing up larger data sets across multiple remote sites and/or storage systems and applications. Here is what to know when you consider cloud backup vendors for your enterprise backup system.
