Infiniband's Data Center March
In this technology profile, we’ll take a fresh look at where InfiniBand stands today and its growing role in the next generation data center. We’ll examine important technology and solution trends where higher-speed switched fabrics are required for optimal performance in several dimensions – solutions like Big Data, web-scale applications, scale-out storage, and virtual I/O for mission-critical applications. Along the way we’ll address some high-level cost and adoption risk concerns.

Today’s enterprise data center is challenged with managing growing data, hosting denser computing clusters, and meeting increasing performance demands. As IT architects work to design efficient solutions for Big Data processing, web-scale applications, elastic clouds, and the virtualized hosting of mission-critical applications they are realizing that key infrastructure design “patterns” include scale-out compute and storage clusters, switched fabrics, and low-latency I/O.
With “big data” storage performance requirements that dwarf the needs of most IT shops, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) knew that scale-out file storage was the only realistic option for its Industrial Forge (iForge) high-performance computing (HPC) service.
A "programmable" data center could allow IT administrators to more holistically manage servers, storage, and networking components.
Symantec Corp. today announced an Apache Hadoop add-on capability for its Veritas Cluster File System to help run "big data" analytics on storage area networks instead of scale-out, commodity servers using local storage.
Swedish startup Compuverde AB entered the object storage market today with software that runs on any commodity hardware and a software gateway that delivers file services.
eG Enterprise 5.6 Provides Unprecedented Performance Visibility, Automated Cross-Silo Correlation and Diagnosis, Pre-Emptive Problem Alerting, and Predictive Analytics to Accelerate Performance Diagnosis, Reduce Operational Cost, Deliver User Satisfaction and Unlock the Potential of Virtual, Cloud and Physical IT Environments
The InfiniBand Trade Association (IBTA), an organization dedicated to maintaining and furthering the IB specification, announced Release 1.3 of Volume 2 of the InfiniBand Architecture Specification.
Big Data has gotten so big that traditional, hierarchical file systems are straining to keep up with today's exponential information growth.
Object storage has long been pigeon-holed as a necessary overhead expense for long-term archive storage—a data purgatory one step before tape or deletion. We have seen many IT shops view object storage as something exotic they have to implement to meet government regulations rather than as a competitive strategic asset that can help their businesses make money.
Optimizing Performance Across Systems and Storage: Best Practices with TeamQuest
In this paper, we’ll briefly review the challenges to assuring good performance in today’s competitive IT environment, and discuss what it takes to overcome these challenges to deploy appropriate end-to-end infrastructure and operationally deliver high-performance service levels. We’ll then introduce TeamQuest, a long-time leading vendor in IT Service Optimization who has recently expanded their world-class performance and capacity management capabilities with deep storage domain coverage. This new solution is unique in both its non-linear predictive modeling leveraged to produce application-specific performance KPIs and its comprehensive span of visibility and management that extends from applications all the way down into SAN storage systems. Ultimately, we’ll see how TeamQuest empowers IT to take full advantage of agility and efficiency solutions like infrastructure virtualization, even for the most performance-sensitive and storage-intensive applications.
One of the hardest challenges for an IT provider today is to guarantee a specific level of "response-time" performance to applications. Performance is absolutely mission-critical for many business applications, which has often led to expensively over-provisioned and dedicated infrastructures. Unfortunately broad technology evolutions like virtualization and cloud architectures that are driving great efficiency and agility gains across wide swaths of the data center can actually make it harder to deliver consistent performance to critical applications.
Local, Shared, Cloud-Based, & Beyond.
Atlantis Computing this week launched a version of its virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) software that speeds performance and reduces storage requirements for persistent virtual desktops.
March 26, 2013 – Platfora has equipped its namesake in-memory platform for Hadoop to bring the interest in big data closer to business users and keep the complex data processes behind the curtains.
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/16/13 -- Cloudmeter, a provider of leading software solutions for transforming real-time network Big Data into actionable information for IT and business users, today announced the general availability of Cloudmeter Stream, in addition to a beta program for Cloudmeter Insight. These new solutions provide a simple yet powerful way for companies to unlock the 'information goldmine' within their networks for transforming data into meaningful business and IT information.
The word on Pivotal, the new big data venture spun out of EMC and VMware, is that it might pose a serious challenge to Amazon Web Services, which has eaten into both companies' sales by making it affordable to rent computing and storage resources.

Organizations that operate remote and branch offices are often faced with a difficult choice: deploy servers and storage close to users at the edge to ensure local performance or consolidate to the data center to ensure control and safekeeping. A new architectural approach enables IT organizations to resolve the conflict by delivering the best of both worlds – local performance in the branch delivered from the data center.
Join Riverbed Technology for an overview and discussion with industry analyst Taneja Group as they highlight breakthroughs in storage delivery that enable organizations to present datacenter-managed storage, servers, and applications as if they’re local in remote locations. You’ll learn how to:
Ensure control of servers, applications, and data centrally to lower costs, improve security, centralize protection, and simplify management without impacting branch user performance
Recover a remote site and resume operations in minutes from the data center over the WAN
Provision, upgrade, and patch branch systems centrally and resume operations with minimal disruption
Lower costs and transform the delivery of IT services to remote offices like many other industries have already done, including government, healthcare, retail, legal, financial, manufacturing, oil & gas, mining, government, architecture, engineering, and construction
