Towards Unified Storage

Storage architectures are going through a fundamental change. Whereas we have seen most legacy players continue to offer traditional architectures that present a FC interface towards the host and either FC or SCSI, or more recently, SATA drives on the backend, newer players have developed iSCSI storage using grid principles and made the management of storage much easier. We have also seen players combine NAS and SAN in the same box.

Dell PowerVault NX1950

On December 6th, Dell introduced the Dell PowerVault NX1950 – the first of Dell’s product line to incorporate Dell and Microsoft’s co-developed OS version dubbed Windows Unified Data Storage Server. The NX 1950 is aimed squarely at competing with Network Appliance’s midrange NAS offerings, such as the NetApp FAS 270. With the performance optimization and new functionality in Windows Unified Data Storage Server, Dell can now offer double the performance of a NetApp FAS 270 at 50% of the cost.

NetApp Unified Storage Architecture: Adding New Value to Archives and ECM

For a unified storage system to be worthy of the name, it must provide a fully protected and powerful single platform for all aspects of archive and ECM storage requirements. We believe that NetApp has achieved this level of unification. Its FAS storage platform optimizes archive and ECM storage, helps to ensure compliance, and provides integrated data protection in this demanding environment.

Hadoop Storage Options: Time to Ditch DAS?

Hadoop is immensely popular today because it makes big data analysis cheap and simple: you get a cluster of commodity servers and use their processors as compute nodes to do the number crunching, while their internal direct attached storage (DAS) operate as very low cost storage nodes.
