NetApp Extends reach with VTL

Over the past year, disk-based virtual tape library (VTL) solutions have been extremely popular since they easily integrate into existing tape-centric backup environments, while bringing disk speed and reliability. To capitalize on this trend, NetApp recently announced the availability of the NearStore VTL family of disk-based backup and recovery appliances. Available in two models, the appliances include unique self-tuning and “tape smart sizing” features that optimize performance and physical tape capacity.

Data Domain-COS Gets a VTL

On January 23, 2006, Data Domain announced virtual tape library (VTL) functionality for its family of disk-based DD400 Enterprise Series Restorers. Disk-based VTL solutions have become extremely popular over the past year because they are easily deployed and address the speed and reliability requirements of tape-centric backup environments. The DD400 Series appliances can now be configured as a NAS disk target and a VTL simultaneously, which provides deployment flexibility for storage administrators.

ADIC Acquires COS

On March 14, ADIC announced the acquisition of Rocksoft Ltd., an Australian software company with fundamental intellectual property in the data de-duplication field. Taneja Group classifies this technology as Capacity Optimized Storage (COS), which enables data compression of 20x on average by storing only unique data elements. COS technology can significantly reduce the size of backup data, facilitate remote replication, and enable long-term disk-based data retention.

ExaGrid: An Intelligent Approach to Data Protection - Profile

We are now several years into the adoption phase of enterprise disk-based data protection. Over these years, we’ve seen customer knowledge rise dramatically. In our frequent discussions with end users looking to deploy this critical technology, we have learned that they now have high expectations for their disk-based solutions: IT teams demand easy integration with their existing backup infrastructures, non-disruptive scalability, capacity optimization, multi-site coverage, all coupled with a compelling ROI story.

Diligent HyperFactor

In the past 24 months, we have seen disk-based data protection and archiving become an essential component of most enterprises. With massive 100 TB+ disk-based repositories becoming increasingly common on near-term enterprise roadmaps, finding ways to optimize those disk capacities is now a top of mind concern. Even with widely available cost-effective disk, our research finds that capacities still account for over 50% of most data storage budgets, with disk-based secondary storage very commonly exceeding 50% year-over-year growth rates.

SEPATON ContentAware

Over the last three years the use of disk technology for data protection and archiving has become commonplace, especially in the larger enterprises. The reasons are clear: tape technology simply does not yield the reliability or the speed required for either the backup or the restore process. The same can be said for the archival process.

The evolution of data deduplication technology continues

New technologies come to market as value-add features for existing mainstream products that are then later merged into these products. It's often the only way a new vendor can bring a product to market, like what happened with data deduplication technology.
