Technology

Includes iSCSI, Fibre Channel or FC, InfiniBand or IB, SMI-S, RDMA over IP, FCoE, CEE, SAS, SCSI, NPIV, SSD.

All technologies relating to storage and servers are covered in this section. Taneja Group analysts have deep technology and business backgrounds and several have participated in the development of several of these technologies. We take pride in explaining complex technologies in a simple enough manner for IT, the press community and the industry at large to understand.

The case for Intelligent Storage (Dell)

In the past decade, a volatile business climate and a dynamic technology landscape have combined to raise the pressures on the enterprise datacenter, and especially on the storage infrastructure that underlies it. The need to adapt to such constantly-shifting demands and technology developments has sorely tested the limits of existing networked storage solutions. The virtualization mega-trend has dramatically changed the way information is sized, controlled, and protected. But traditional networked storage solutions are too often rigid, complex, and inefficient. Taneja Group has identified a way forward. We have collected the essential elements of the storage solutions needed for today’s new IT realities under the term “intelligent storage.” In this profile, we define what we mean by storage intelligence, whether that storage is file or block, and whether its architecture is SAN, NAS, or unified. We then examine how Dell is delivering this intelligence with its EqualLogic storage line. Wherever you are in your datacenter evolution, we think it’s time to examine whether your storage has the intelligence to carry you to your end goals.

The HP Storage Portfolio – Building the Foundation for the Virtualized Infrastructure

Over the past couple of years, HP has executed an impressive number of storage acquisitions, and is systematically innovating around each of three key technologies – HP 3PAR, P4000, and their deduplicating StoreOnce. Perhaps nowhere are the synergies more clear than among the virtual infrastructure. In this Opinion, we’ll turn a critical eye toward these synergies, and render the Taneja Group perspective on whether HP is on the right path.

Riverbed Optimization for the Cloud – Weaving together the connectivity behind the hybrid cloud

There’s little doubt today that the concept of cloud is an irresistible force that is altering the landscape upon which IT systems are built and integrated. The fact is, the cloud is already here in data centers today, as the footprint of IT has rapidly changed and is quickly becoming a mix of services drawn from both public and private clouds. Whether it is by a small degree, or a large degree, the potential of using many of this first generation of Internet-scattered, public cloud services has opportunistically drawn in many users, even within the most stoic and unchangeable of institutions. In this Solution Brief, we’ll examine how one vendor – Riverbed – is turning their technology to the integration of these cloud services with the traditional infrastructure; an area where they are particularly enabled to deliver with their rich history of optimizing connectivity and capabilities across systems scattered around the globe.

TVS: StorSimple – Storing data the right way

In this Taneja Group Technology Validation exercise, we put an innovative new array to the test to see just what was possible when a vendor stretches their wings and takes on much more than another version of storage done the same old way.

The vendor in this case is StorSimple, and what they propose is that a single storage system can do everything, while doing it more cost effectively, and with almost zero footprint in the data center. While that may sound like an almost unbelievable set of capabilities on the surface, what StorSimple has done is integrate cloud storage over the Internet behind a primary storage array for a truly unique set of capabilities. By coupling the two together, StorSimple unlocks infinite storage capacity, a small form factor, utter simplicity, and the tools to automatically protect data in place, forever. We anticipate this will hit home with a lot of customers – no more migration, no more backup, and built in DR finally makes storage seem like a technology that matches the needs of today’s business.

Join us in this Technology Validation report as we see if StorSimple’s promises hold true, and just what those promises look poised to do for today’s data center.

Storage for the Integrated Virtual Infrastructure: HP P4000 SAN Solutions

This paper examines the features and capabilities of the HP P4000 product family, and shows how these SAN solutions help businesses to overcome the storage-related growing pains they typically encounter as they deploy and scale out a virtual infrastructure.

Maximizing Database Performance With Dell Equallogic Hybrid Arrays

Today’s combination of rapidly-accelerating demand for data and rapidly-consolidating datacenter infrastructure makes choosing the right storage for each of your business applications more important—and more difficult—than ever. In our view, it’s time more of this burden is taken on by the SAN itself. In other words, it’s time for more SAN intelligence. The intelligent SAN should optimize all available storage resources—automatically. In this profile explore how dynamic, multi-tiered OLTP workloads test the limits of traditional manual storage tiering strategies, and further strengthen the case for automated tiering on the SAN itself. Then we review Dell’s internal benchmark test results and speak to Carnival Cruise Lines, an EqualLogic customer, in order to evaluate how Dell’s hybrid SSD/SAS arrays are delivering higher performance and lower overhead both in the lab and in the field.
