Data is the lifeblood of an enterprise. And yet data has been protected in essentially the same fashion over the past two decades, i.e. by backing it up to tape and sending the tapes offsite. This method alone is no longer adequate and a spade of new technologies has become available in the last five years. These new technologies are already transforming the way data is protected, how long it is kept online, how it is archived. Recovery Management has emerged as a new discipline focused on recovering data rather than copying data. The new compliance requirements are essentially requiring companies of all sizes to upgrade their data protection infrastructures or be subject to huge fines. The level of innovation in this space is torrid. Taneja Group covers this space from end to end and has defined many of the new categories that now are considered the norm. The analysts that cover this space have deep industry backgrounds in developing and marketing these technologies.
Symantec Backup Exec: Comprehensive Data Protection for Growing Businesses
Symantec recently juiced up its Backup Exec (BUE) product line adding appliance and cloud based offerings to the mix. This announcement reinforces Symantec’s commitment to data protection for small and medium sized businesses, the charter being led by the newly formed Information Management Group (IMG). What is significant about this announcement is that Symantec is seeking to morph Backup Exec from a single product into more of a data protection platform. Symantec envisions Backup Exec to be the data protection platform of choice for SMBs and small to medium enterprises. With features like VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V integration, deduplication for virtual infrastructure, support for cloud as a tier and end point protection, Symantec is squarely setting its sights at beating competitors like CommVault (Simpana Galaxy), Microsoft (Data Protection Manager), Acronis (TrueImage), CA (ARCserve) and others to name a few.
This Taneja Group Opinion covers Symantec’s Backup Exec – providing a complete data protection solution for SMB/SME and consolidating its already dominant market share.
Email Archiving for SMBs
Archiving of corporate email has become a requirement in most businesses today because of tightening governance controls, demands for capacity optimization and growing pressures to reduce costs. But email archiving isn't just for large corporations: Small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) with small IT departments can deploy email archiving solutions after doing some research. Vendors of email archiving solutions have products that appeal to SMBs, but organizations should perform a cost-benefit analysis of the solutions that cater to businesses of their size and industry.
A Holistic Approach to Managing Data Protection Environments
Data protection solutions often get a bad rap under the premise that they are too cumbersome to manage. In fact, data protection solutions such as EMC NetWorker, Data Domain, Avamar etc. do an excellent job at doing what they have been designed to do – protect data. Furthermore, vendors have gone to great lengths to make such solutions simple to deploy and manage. So why is there this paradox?
This is a Taneja Group Solution Profile of the EMC Data Protection Advisor solution.

IBM ProtecTIER: Peak Protection For Oracle Database Backups
Solutions such as IBM’s ProtecTIER make database backups far more efficient by providing high speed backup and recovery performance while reducing the amount of data landing on tape. This Solution Profile describes the benefits of using ProtecTIER deduplication solutions in an Oracle data protection environment: high ratios of deduplication and compression for Oracle records, integration with RMAN, and some of the fastest recovery times in the deduplication industry.
