Visibility Throughout the Virtual Infrastructure

2009 is shaping up to be an exciting year for the virtualized data center. If the rise of the virtual server and the resulting virtual machine sprawl of the last few years have taught us anything, it's the critical need for management visibility. Highly mobile virtual machines, sliding from server to server when demand changes or a failure occurs, test the limits of traditional server management strategies. Add virtual storage and networks and, well...you can see where this is going.

Visibility is the starting point for managing a dynamic infrastructure, and there are exciting products coming to market that promise to clear the windshield. IT managers need visibility at the wire level, both inter- and intra-domain, with powerful correlation and dependency mapping, in order to make quick, intelligent decisions. How will a live VM migration impact my storage utilization? How can I optimize SAN performance to improve application-level SLA adherence?

The team at Virtual Instruments is building on their storage optimization pedigree and the NetWisdom product suite with SAN I/O Intelligence, to deliver instrumentation across the virtualization spectrum. I spoke with them recently to learn more about their vision of true virtual infrastructure instrumentation: collecting, correlating, and reporting the cross-domain metrics needed for holistic data center optimization.

I think they are on to something: cross-domain virtual resource monitoring and analytics provide the raw data needed for both human and automated decision-making in the dynamic data center. We here at Taneja will be watching this space closely.
