Oracle ZS5 Throws Down a Cloud Ready Gauntlet

Is anyone in storage really paying close enough attention to Oracle? I think too many mistakenly dismiss Oracle’s infrastructure solutions as expensive, custom and proprietarily Oracle database-only hardware. But, surprise, Oracle has been successfully evolving the well respected ZFS as a solid cloud-scale filer, today releasing the fifth version of the ZFS storage array - the Oracle ZS5. And perhaps most surprising, the ZS series powers Oracle’s own fast growing cloud storage services (at huge scale - over 600PBs and growing).

So what? Well, a suffering NetApp shop looking for either larger scale, greater performance, or even consolidation (yes, cost reduction!), should look hard at the ZS5. Its cloud “builder” ready (and ready for seamless hybridizing with Oracle’s cloud storage as its made of the exact same things). Without going deep into specs, this can have 300+TB of flash as cache in front of 9PB of capacity. And that, Oracle claims, enables a cost justified 4:1 consolidation of NetAapp filers - with vastly increased performance.  And that’s before you factor in the ability to elastically expand in a hybrid fashion into Oracle’s cloud if you need some burst, archive or other capacity.

By the way, know of anything else that can offer file based restores at 60TB/hr? When you need to restore something critical, you want to do it fast. The ZS series will be popular just for file DR.  Why do you need another layer of infrastructure for this (that is probably slower)?

Of course, Oracle has added several Oracle database co-engineering optimizations to the ZS5, supposing that you might have some important Oracle databases. But that’s not a requirement here - rather it’s an additional way can Oracle synergize value. This is still ZFS, and the ZS5 is fully managable by Openstack if you are building toward a completely open vision. This is a scalable filer that will be hard to beat!
