IBM Launches Storage Solutions Optimized for Hybrid Cloud and Big Data Analytics

Following the recent negative press surrounding IBM’s sagging storage business, this week’s announcement of the FlashSystem A9000 family and other products must come as a breath of fresh air, to IBM, its customers and partners. We believe the all-flash FlashSystem A9000 fills a real need in the market, for large (and rapidly scaling) multi-user customers looking to move to the hybrid cloud, as well as cloud service providers running virtualized and cloud-architected workloads. With built-in quality of service (QoS) capabilities, the A9000 and A9000R are designed to run in mixed-workload and multi-tenant environments, in which enterprises or service providers need to dynamically provide greater resource to their highest-priority applications. The QoS features enable IOPS or bandwidth to be capped by pool, volume or host, giving enterprises and service providers the granularity they need to control or eliminate noisy neighbor issues and ensure that they meet SLAs for their highest priority tenants and workloads.

Meanwhile, the recently revealed IBM - SanDisk collaboration, reiterated in this week’s announcement, to marry InfiniFlash storage systems with the IBM Spectrum Scale file system (formerly GPFS) promises to accelerate big data analytics for a whole variety of applications and industries. The InfiniFlash for IBM Spectrum Scale Solution is designed to provide cost-effective but highly scalable performance to applications as diverse as healthcare, genome sequencing, media/streaming, and Oracle backends, as well as OpenStack cloud services such as data protection, archiving and file sync-and-share. The joint offering will provide all-flash, unified storage, including support for a variety of object and file protocols (NFS, CIFS, and HDFS). SanDisk does a great job of describing both the solution and specific use-case examples in this March 1st blog post.

With these two big announcements in March and April, IBM Storage is on a roll, which we hope will continue through the rest of the year.
