CommVault Attempts to Rise Above the Noise

After more than 2 years in development, CommVault recently unveiled Simpana v9 with a multitude of new features aimed at taking mind and marketshare away from Symantec’s NetBackup and IBM’s Tivoli Storage Manager in the enterprise data protection space. The new functionality comes in the form of source-side deduplication, expanded protection and auto-discovery of virtual machines, competitive migration tools, array-based snapshotting capabilities as well as performance enhancements and a new capacity-based licensing model.

However, with some of the recent announcements by Symantec and its new NetBackup 5000 appliance, along with EMC Networker’s new integration with Data Domain, one of the more interesting bits in this announcement is Simpana’s new Universal Deduplication. Over the last few years, the deduplication market has experienced some of the largest growth rates in the storage market, fueled initially by vendors like Data Domain and Quantum that performed target deduplication. Unfortunately, target deduplication systems only optimize data when it arrives at the destination/target and do little to optimize data at the origin. The result is a tremendous amount of data being pushed through an already constricted network pipe, only to have upwards of 90% tossed aside once it gets deduplicated at the target.

Since most environments cannot afford unlimited bandwidth, an ideal solution is to dedupe the data at its source, before sending it across the wire, and then dedupe across the multiple backup clients at the target. With Simpana v9, customers are now able to do just this with new source-side deduplication that expands on CommVault’s existing target deduplication that was introduced in Simpana v8. This end-to-end deduplication strategy alleviates many of the IO bandwidth bottleneck issues found in target deduplication environments.

We believe that with CommVault’s new universal deduplication, along with Simpana 9’s other enhancements, administrators will notice improved operational efficiencies and significant cost reductions that should get their attention.
