IBM Spectrum Virtualize – A Common Data Management Layer for Hybrid Cloud Environments

The latest IBM Spectrum Virtualize release (8.1.1) extends IBM’s storage capabilities into the public cloud. Specifically, IBM Spectrum Virtualize now supports data movement and continuous replication between on-premises storage and IBM Cloud.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize is the data management layer for the IBM software-defined storage family, which includes IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC), IBM Storwize family, IBM FlashSystem V9000 and VersaStack. These offerings represent a huge customer base, and the ability to leverage Spectrum Virtualize as a common hybrid cloud data management layer offers these customers a clear benefit, including support for several new use cases, including:

  • Migrating data between on-premises and cloud data centers or between cloud data centers
  • Implementing disaster recovery between on-premises and cloud data centers or between cloud data centers
  • Enabling cloud-based DevOps with easy replication of data from on-premises sources

IBM’s record of supporting cloud heterogeneity makes it reasonable to expect support for additional public clouds in the future. Supporting other public clouds will offer IBM customers flexibility to select the right cloud for various workloads and will go a long way toward IBM providing a common interface for true multi-cloud data management.
