Actifio PAS 5.0, Shrinking BU Win & Unattainable SLAs? How About Instant Restores w/ Guaranteed SLAs

Nine months after the initial debut of its Protection and Availability Storage (PAS) data protection and data management platform, last week Actifio announced a major upgrade to its flagship. Taneja Group was so impressed by the effectiveness of the PAS approach that in March 2012, we created an entirely new category of data protection and management products. Taneja Group calls the new category Virtualized Data Protection and Availability Storage (vDPAS), which enables SLA-driven data protection and data management across the entire production environment – regardless of application, system or deployment model. It protects multiple systems, environments (physical, virtual and cloud) and applications in a single, highly efficient, virtualized storage pool – the fountain of life conceptualized by Taneja Group over five years ago.

The tidal wave of data growth and the proliferation of data copies across the entire organization stored on primary storage and tapes has rendered majority of the legacy backup solutions available today inadequate. The ineffectiveness of the legacy data protection solutions gave birth to a new breed of vendors with more current approach to data protection and availability. Unquestionably, in Taneja Group view, Actifio PAS symbolizes the vDPAS vision more so than anyone else in the market today. Actifio PAS represents a paradigm shift in data protection. It uses a distributed object file system to virtualize data management and provide a single-solution for data protection and restoration instantly providing thin or full copies on-demand to all stakeholder applications.

Specific SLAs utilize application-aware priority settings and can be configured in the interface utilizing best practices, based on system needs. This single solution is easily deployed into an existing infrastructure to replace disparate data protection products and test and development toolsets. PAS can also be used for unified search across indexed data and as an analytics platform for improved compliance and business value. Actifio solution does not require backup windows yet provides instantaneous restores without data movement – allowing organizations to always meet Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs).

Actifio PAS is not a new backup software. It, in essence, is a new class of a storage system. The key attributes of Actifio PAS are:

  1. Ability to capture data once and reuse it for multiple applications.
  2. Ability to instantly make the data available, like a storage system would. It looks like a storage system, act like one, and users are able to use it like one.
  3. It works across heterogeneous environments.

The benefits of Actifio PAS are:

  1. Single source for all data – Taneja Group conceptualized it as the “fountain of life” achievable through virtualization.
  2. Ability to make most current data current images available to various Line of Business (LOB) and support groups at the press of a button.
  3. Near instantaneous recovery of applications, not just data – across physical and virtual environments with minimal IT involvement.
  4. Simplicity – ease of management.
  5. Drastically Cost, operational and hardware efficiency.
  6. Guaranteed recoverability.
  7. Guaranteed SLAs.
  8. Single solution for data backup, disaster recovery, business continuity, test & development, analytics, snapshots, replication, and archiving.

The latest enhancements in PAS 5.0 are aimed at larger deployments e.g. the new Enterprise Manager that enables simple management of large scale PAS deployment and more diverse enterprises, who are currently using or in the future will use the Actifio PAS. Actifio has significantly bolstered the scalability and performance of PAS 5.0. The new enhancements include:

  • 200 percent dedupe capacity increase
  • 2x increase in throughput
  • 10x bandwidth increase with 10GbE
  • Faster on-boarding of remote applications via portable storage (hard drives or USB-based storage)
  • Overall capacity is now 127 TB
  • Improved workflows to accelerate application development lifecycles
  • Support for Windows and Linux file system data running on direct-attached storage (DAS), network-attached storage (NAS), or a storage area network (SAN)
  • Accelerated test and development in Oracle environments as well as SLA for Oracle, which allows database cloning to decrease test and development storage costs.

Managed Service Providers (MSPs) and Value Added Resellers (VARs) were a major focus of PAS 5.0. There are many features in PAS 5.0 aimed at MSPS including:

  1. Multi-tenancy.
  2. DeDup Async™ replication technology which combines asynchronous replication with deduplication to reduce network bandwidth requirements by as much as 75 percent compared to traditional methods.
  3. Test and development tools.
  4. Enhanced reporting via Actifio Enterprise Reporter.

Actifio capitalized on the limitations of legacy data protection solutions including high cost (storage hardware and software costs), complexity of managing disparate point solutions, and limited capabilities. Actifio PAS revolutionized how data is protected and managed using virtualized storage eliminating hundreds of data copies and replacing those with a single copy of everything in the production environment, drastically reducing storage hardware requirements. Actifio PAS has dramatically reduced complexity, Operational Expenditures (OpEx), and total cost of ownership (TCO) of data protection and management.

Actifio has been winning accolades from industry pundits regarding the simplicity of their solution and has amassed over 100 customers within short nine months of its existence. Its solution is already sold by over 120 VARs worldwide.
